The unit of measurement used to measure a computer's clock speed is called Hertz (Hz). It represents one cycle per second and measures one clock speed. In computer clock speed, one hertz is equal to one tick per second. The clock speed of a computer is normally measured in MHz (MHz) or GHz (GHz)

There are two primary manufacturers of computer microprocessors (processors).

1. Intel: Intel's desktop CPU includes Celeron, Pentium and Core

2. Advanced Micro Devices (AMD): AMD's desktop processors include Sempron, Athlon and Phenom.

There are three levels of Xeon processors. 3000 series processors have one core, 5000 series processors have two cores, and 7000 series processors have two cores.

Different types of AMD

•  AMD Sempron: - The AMD Sempron processor is intended to address the issues of home and business PC clients.

• AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core.
• AMD Athlon 64.
• AMD Opteron.

By comparison, AMD processors are more economical than Intel chips. While most Intel processors lock at a certain clocking speed, many AMD processors can be "overclocked" - that is, they can be built to run at a faster speed than is available right out of the box.

Overall, the two companies are producing processors within almost every front - creating distance from each other on price, power and performance. Intel chips offer better performance per core, but AMD is compensating with more cores at a given price and better onboard graphics.
